EPISODE 414: INFESTED

How ya been? We’re back with a review of another 2024 horror entry, INFESTED. Aka ‘Vermines’ in it’s native France. 

People are so repelled by spiders they’ve got their own sub-genre: 1990’s Arachnophobia (see episode 219 of WGT for our review), 2002’s Eight Legged Freaks, 1977’s Kingdom of the Spiders (starring motherfucking William Shatner), 1958’s Earth vs. the Spider (an MST3K classic), 2024’s Madame Webb (truly horrifying), and many more. So how does this one stack up against the rest? Listen and find out. INFESTED is currently available to stream on Shudder. 

Incidentally, it’s the debut feature of director Sebastien Vanicek, reportedly tapped to helm the next film in the Evil Dead franchise.

Late Night With the Devil had great reception and strong word of mouth on the festival circuit late last year, so naturally all three of us were looking forward to it’s eventual release to a broader audience. As we continue getting into some new 2024 horror releases, we take a drastic swing from the indie horror of Stop Motion in our previous episode, to the big studio fuckery of IMAGINARY. It’s Blumhouse, it’s PG-13, and it’s directed by the same individual who directed modern classics (SIKE) like Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare and Blumhouse’s Fantasty Island. GODDAMN. Needless to say, we had fun talking about this one.

Welcome back haomies! One more trip to the 90’s before we get it going with some 2024 horror releases. This episode we get into the chamber piece horrors of 1997’s CUBE. The film is fairly influential and has developed a niche cult following over time. Jorge and Jacob also discuss Cube 2, which is fucking insane. Both are currently available on Prime for those wanting a re-watch or watching for the first time.

If you do one little job, you build a widget in Saskatoon, and the next thing you know, it’s two miles under the desert, the essential component of a death machine. I was right! EPISODE 401: GODZILLA MINUS ONE

Another year has come and (almost) gone but we’ve got a couple more episodes for you as we close out 2023.

Gojira is one of the most enduring film characters in cinema history. Since first appearing in the 1954 original, everyone’s favorite reptilian Kaiju has starred in a total of 38 films and counting. Between Warner Bros. MonsterVerse film franchise and the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series on Apple TV+, Godzilla is having a bit of a moment right now, again. We’ve seen a lot of iterations of the guy; the good guy version, the bad guy version, the neutral force of nature, the rubber suits, the bad 90’s CGI, cartoons, and lots of dope toys.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE is the first period piece in the franchise and the first since the 1954 original to reset the clock and setting back to post-World War 2, and post-atomic holocaust, Japan. So what’d we think of this genre hybrid spectacle that returns the big guy to his roots? Listen and find out.

When all was said and done, there was one film which ended up narrowly edging out other finalists like American Werewolf in Paris and Tales From the Hood.
