Ep214: Brightburn – WGT

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… finally the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I don’t know about you, but I have had it up to my tits with all of the superhero movies being shoved down our throats. For the last twelve years almost every film has been: weak villain attacks, fly, punch, celebrate, repeat. However, unlike zombies, the superhero genre has several ways of keeping itself feel fresh and interesting.

You may be asking yourself, “but how can superhero movies keep from feeling stale?”. To which I reply, “calm down, I’ll tell you! Have you learned nothing of how this works?” Superhero films can stay relevant by changing up the formula on occasion. For example they can make the super being a child, or make it a villain story, or in the case of Brightburn, you can do both! (Review starts at 21:30)

True crime podcasts are currently among the most successful shows available, even if they’re more known for their terrible jokes than their educational values. What lies deep inside of us that sparks this fascination for brutal murderers who commit unspeakable acts?

As summer draws ever closer, Netflix is hoping that the spring rains will have washed away the years of shitty-zombie-stink and has brought us Black Summer. Ep210: The Head Hunter – WGT

Every year, Matt and Alia come back from the Telluride Horror Show and there always seems to be one movie they absolutely rave about. Some movies, like 2018’s Aterrados, absolutely live up to the hype, while some like 2015’s They Look Like People do not.

Here we are again. Another year has passed, another film fest has come and gone, and this year the adorable duo were singing the The Head Hunter‘s praises from those snowy Telluride mountaintops. (Review starts at 24:42) In fact, Matt was quoted in the films trailer, calling The Head Hunter, “a gut punch of tension, horror, and dread”.

Can the film possibly live up to the massive amounts of praise showered upon it? Or will accounts of the film’s greatness prove to be just a fantasy?
