EPISODE 408: CUBE

Welcome back haomies! One more trip to the 90’s before we get it going with some 2024 horror releases. This episode we get into the chamber piece horrors of 1997’s CUBE. The film is fairly influential and has developed a niche cult following over time. Jorge and Jacob also discuss Cube 2, which is fucking insane. Both are currently available on Prime for those wanting a re-watch or watching for the first time.

“It’s all the same machine, right? The Pentagon, multinational corporations, the police. If you do one little job, you build a widget in Saskatoon, and the next thing you know, it’s two miles under the desert, the essential component of a death machine. I was right! All along, my whole life, I knew it! I told you! Nobody’s ever going to call me paranoid again! We’ve gotta get out of here and blow the lid off this thing!” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 408!

EPISODE 407: DISTURBING BEHAVIOR

Greetings! We’ve got a couple more visits to the late 90’s before getting into some current 2024 horror releases.

DISTURBING BEHAVIOR is the raw essence of 1998 distilled into pure, shameless, trash. Katie Holmes, horny/homicidal teens, an incoherent mind control premise, stock thematic elements about the dangers of conformity, and James Marsden looking like a full grown man in his early 30’s portraying a high school student. Join us as we discuss this important milestone in cinematic history.

EPISODE 406: eXistenZ

It’s Cronenberg time. A bit of a spiritual successor to Videodrome, 1999’s eXistenZ sees Papa Cronenberg fucking with gaming and virtual reality in his characteristically cerebral, absurd, and physically repellent way.

eXistenZ joins Dark City and The Matrix as late 90’s, pre-millenium forays into the notion of simulated reality and this is definitely the most surreal of the bunch, and possibly the most prophetic. This is Jorge’s first viewing in a couple decades and Jacob’s first ever. Enjoy and long live the new flesh!

“You’re stuck now, aren’t you? You want to go back  because there’s nothing happening here. We’re safe. It’s boring. It’s worse than that. I’m not sure… I’m not sure here, where we are, is real at all. This feels like a game to me. And you, you’re beginning to feel a bit like a game character.” It’s The Who Goes There Podcast Episode 406!

First up is 2001’s French dark fantasy/period piece, action/horror genre mashup, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF. It’s got French knights, indigenous warriors, vatican spies, harlots, political intrigue, martial arts, sword fights, secret societies, and a big damn monster that rips people apart.

EPISODE 404: VIRUS

Picture this if you will, it’s January 1999. Britney Spears’ debut album is all over the place, bands like Sugar Ray and Limp Bizkit saturate alternative radio, Michael Bay’s Armageddon was the biggest movie last Summer, and Bill Clinton “did not have sexual relations with that woman.” SIKE! Just as we begin our spiral into the imminent Y2K apocalypse, Universal Pictures decides to dump an R-Rated $75 million scifi-horror adaptation of a dope Dark Horse comic book in theaters.

This episode, King Hans, the benevolent, bearded lord of our Patreon has decreed we review 1999’s VIRUS, starring the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Baldwin, and motherfucking Donald Sutherland with a strong contender for the most absurd Irish accent in cinema history. It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode #404!!!

EPISODE 402: THANKSGIVING

Happy New Year pilgrims! Welcome back and welcome to 2024. This episode (our last recorded in 2023) we discuss Eli Roth’s holiday-themed slasher, THANKSGIVING.
Is the movie a new annual tradition or is it just another seasonal annoyance? Listen and find out.

“Show some enthusiasm. Thanksgiving is an institution here. It’s Thanks-fucking-giving! Every weapon he’s using is straight off a Thanksgiving table. This year, there will be… no leftovers!” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 402!

EPISODE 401: GODZILLA MINUS ONE

Another year has come and (almost) gone but we’ve got a couple more episodes for you as we close out 2023.

Gojira is one of the most enduring film characters in cinema history. Since first appearing in the 1954 original, everyone’s favorite reptilian Kaiju has starred in a total of 38 films and counting. Between Warner Bros. MonsterVerse film franchise and the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series on Apple TV+, Godzilla is having a bit of a moment right now, again. We’ve seen a lot of iterations of the guy; the good guy version, the bad guy version, the neutral force of nature, the rubber suits, the bad 90’s CGI, cartoons, and lots of dope toys.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE is the first period piece in the franchise and the first since the 1954 original to reset the clock and setting back to post-World War 2, and post-atomic holocaust, Japan. So what’d we think of this genre hybrid spectacle that returns the big guy to his roots? Listen and find out.

“Then what do we do about the horror before us now? Just let it happen? Only you can save us from this tragedy. Even if you use the device to defeat Godzilla, how can it be used as a weapon, if you don’t publish your research? Ogata, we human beings are weak creatures. Even if I burn my notes, everything is still in my head. As long as I’m alive, who can say I wouldn’t be coerced into using it again?” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 401!

EPISODE 400: THE DEVIL’S REJECTS

We had a little poll not too long ago to select what film we should do for our milestone 400th episode. When all was said and done, there was one film which ended up narrowly edging out other finalists like American Werewolf in Paris and Tales From the Hood. That film was Rob Zombie’s 2005 ode to psychotic trash , THE DEVIL’S REJECTS.

“If you’re gonna start the killing, you best start it right here. Make sure I’m all the way dead, because I’ll come back and make you my bitch.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast, Episode #400!

EPISODE 398: WHEN EVIL LURKS

This episode we weigh-in on WHEN EVIL LURKS, Argentinian writer/director Demian Rugna’s follow up to his 2017 feature film debut, Atterados.

There’s a whole lot of films in the demonic possession horror sub-genre. Is it still possible to create something fresh and unique with such an arguably overused trope? Listen and find out. Also, watch and find out. WHEN EVIL LURKS is currently available on Shudder if you haven’t seen it.

EPISODE 397: SPECIES

The year is 1995. Kurt Cobain blew his head off last year, or someone blew his head off, at the very least. Singles from Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Offsprings’ Smash, and Radiohead’s The Bends are lighting up the radio. And Wonderwall, don’t forget Wonderwall. Secretly, and shamefully, you regularly check VH1 to see if the video for Collective Soul’s song, “December” is on. No one must ever know about this 🎶

Then, here comes Natasha Henstridge as a predatory alien searching for the perfect mate to begin populating her species on Earth🤰

Forest Whitaker plays a man with clairvoyant abilities, which in this film apparently means he is gifted with the ability to point out obvious, readily observable things. Michael Madsen wears sunglasses the whole time and doesn’t know how to hold a gun. Then, there’s Oscar-winner, Sir Ben fucking Kingsley approaching the material like it’s Shakespeare.

Join us as we revisit SPECIES, a very special relic of 1995 🧬

“You created a monster with some kind of formula you got from outer space. The damn thing got away, and now you want us to hunt it down and kill it. She would make one excellent biological weapon. If someone out there thought we were some kind of galactic weed that was going to spread through the universe…she’s the cure and where the disease.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 397!
