EPISODE 430: NOSFERATU

Join us and succumb to the horny darkness of Robert Eggers’ Adventures of Count Orlok and the Cucks of Wisburg!!! The fuck is Wisburg? It’s the German city where the plague rats land, IDIOT!

“I have seen things in this world that would make Isaac Newton crawl back into his mother’s womb! We are not so enlightened as we are blinded by the gaseous light of science. If we are to tame darkness, we must first face that it exists!”

EPISODE 428: TERRIFIER 3

Well well well, here we go again. This episode we review Art the Clown’s third outing, and this one is set during Christmas! Yes dorks, we know technically it’s Art’s 4th cinematic appearance if you count All Hallows’ Eve.

Get ready for more of the sophisticated, smartly written, unbearable suspense which has made this franchise famous! SIKE
But seriously get ready for a straight ahead slasher with no added filler! Oh wait, never mind this one is 125 minutes, maybe a third of which is what you watch a movie like this for.
For real though, get ready for a thoughtful and well-acted character study with a lot on its mind that totally justifies its runtime…okay we’ll stop.

“Jingle bells, jingle bells. This place fuckin’ smells..” (actual dialogue from the movie)

EPISODE 427: SMILE 2

We’re back! Just in time to help you cope with Trump 2.0
This episode we review writer/director Parker Finn’s follow up to his 2022 debut, SMILE 2.

Skye Riley: Well, have you gone to the police?
Morris: And say what? My brother’s suicide was actually caused by some cosmic evil being that no one else can see? The police can’t stop this thing anyway.
Skye: So I’m just supposed to wait until this thing kills me?
Morris: No, I want you to help me destroy it.
Skye: How?
Morris: From what I can tell, the chain stops when an infected host dies in some other way outside of the being’s control. My guess is that, just like other parasites, without a living host it has no way to survive. It’s ceases to exist.
Skye: So it only stops if–if I die before it kills me?
Morris: Exactly. We need to kill you first.
Skye: What?!

EPISODE 426: LITTLE OTIK

This episode we get weird, like that’s anything new, with the turn of the century Czechoslovakian dark comedy surrealist horror of LITTLE OTIK (aka Greedy Guts). Oh you’ve never heard of it? Good gooooooooood.

Neither had we to be honest. Credit goes to the current lord of our Patreon, King Hans! He always gives us the wildest recommendations, and we love him for it, as we do all our supporters and Patreon members.

“Show me your Otik. That’s his name, isn’t it? Don’t worry, I won’t eat him. He’s our child and we have to stick by him through thick and thin.” It’s The Who Goes There Podcast Episode 426!

EPISODE 425: THE SUBSTANCE

French Writer/Director Coralie Fargeat made her feature film debut with 2017’s REVENGE, a visceral, vibrant, and often lyrical rape/revenge thriller. The film leaned hard into tropes usually reserved for more action oriented films featuring an initially victimized protagonist transforming into a lethal retributive anti-hero. Fargeat herself said she was directly influenced by films like Mad Max, Rambo, and Kill Bill.

Revenge was a favorite of ours on the show in it’s year of release, and one of the more notable genre feature film debuts in a decade full of them. She was also praised as one of the more exciting voices in contemporary feminist cinema, along with her contemporary Julia Ducournau (Raw, Titane), also hailing from France, as they both brought a woman’s perspective and a contemporary lens to Cronenbergian body horror and psychosexual tension. Needless to say, we were optimistic and curious about what Fargeat would do next.

“One single injection unlocks your DNA, starting a new cellular division, that will release another version of yourself. This is THE SUBSTANCE. Everything comes from you. Everything is you. This is simply a better version of yourself. You just have to share. One week for one and one week for the other. A perfect balance of seven days each. The one and only thing not to forget: YOU. ARE. ONE. You can’t escape from yourself.”

EPISODE 423: ALIEN ROMULUS

The time has come. The three of us are all big fans of the Alien franchise and director/writer Fede Alvarez has arrived with his buddy and co-writer Rodo Sayagues to give their take.

As the first film in the long running Alien series to be produced by 20th Century Studios following it’s acquisition by Disney, Alien: Romulus successfully resuscitated the franchise, grossing over $350 million worldwide. But at what cost?

Will the film’s gorgeous production design, modern horror tropes, and nostalgic nods to the greatest hits of the franchise be enough? Or is what some identify as an over-reliance on fan service, imitation, incoherent plotting, and contrivances, ultimately a deal breaker? What did we think? You’re about to find out.

“Z-01 contains the genome responsible for the Xeno’s ability to accelerate and slow down its metabolism at will. Its symbiotic capableness easily rewrites the host’s DNA through its blood. This is a much needed and well overdue upgrade for humanity. We simply cannot wait for evolution anymore.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 423!

EPISODE 422: TRAP

It’s a trap! No really, it is. The one, the only, M. Night Shamalamalama returns with this high concept thriller starring Josh Hartnett as a serial killer taking his daughter to see a pop star portrayed by the writer/director’s daughter.

Review begins right around 45:25. We love you. Another new ep in a few days, next up is Alien: Romulus.

“You know the Butcher? That freakin’ nutjob that goes around just chopping people up? Well, the feds or whatever heard that he’s gonna be here today, so they set up a trap for him. This whole concert? It’s a trap. They’re watching all the exits, checking everyone that leaves. There’s no way to get out of here. It’s kinda dope, right?”

EPISODE 421: LONGLEGS

Welcome back! The time has come for us to discuss the much anticipated serial killer flick, LONGLEGS.

Preceded by months of cryptic and highly effective viral marketing, it’s a big swing from indie film distributor NEON and boasts a strong genre pedigree in writer/director Osgood Perkins, and stars Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe. What did we think? Listen and find out. Also a bunch of other stuff discussed in the first half as usual.
Review starts at 45:25

“The seventh she to be given the same choice they’ve all been given. Crimson, or clover. Accept the gift and destroy, destroy yourself and yourselves. Or keep it. And bow down. Bow all the way down. And get right down to the dirty, dirty work. Work that gets dirty as it cleans. Like a mop. Like a rag.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 421!

EPISODE 414: INFESTED

How ya been? We’re back with a review of another 2024 horror entry, INFESTED. Aka ‘Vermines’ in it’s native France.

People are so repelled by spiders they’ve got their own sub-genre: 1990’s Arachnophobia (see episode 219 of WGT for our review), 2002’s Eight Legged Freaks, 1977’s Kingdom of the Spiders (starring motherfucking William Shatner), 1958’s Earth vs. the Spider (an MST3K classic), 2024’s Madame Webb (truly horrifying), and many more. So how does this one stack up against the rest? Listen and find out. INFESTED is currently available to stream on Shudder.

Incidentally, it’s the debut feature of director Sebastien Vanicek, reportedly tapped to helm the next film in the Evil Dead franchise.

“The Spider will eat you alive! Bullets…won’t kill it! Flames…can’t burn it! Nothing…can stop it! 50 tons of creeping black horror! It Must Eat You to Live!” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 414!
