EPISODE 388: BLACK MIRROR, SEASON 6

Awww shit, here we go again. This episode we review all five episodes of Black Mirror, Season 6. While Season 4 had it’s high points, most notably an episode entitled USS Callister starring Meth Damon (Jessie Plemons), I think most will agree Season 5 was easily the worst of the series. So, we had high hopes that series creator Charlie Brooker had taken his time and bounced back with a new season to bring us more of the existential dread and dark, dizzying forays into the implications of technology and consciousness we’ve come to expect from the series since it debuted back in 2011. Is this the case? Listen to the episode and find out!

EPISODE 386: STARSHIP TROOPERS

Welcome back. How ya been? This episode we’re talking Paul Verhoeven’s gory military satire, STARSHIP TROOPERS. While universally praised for its staggering special visual effects and creature design courtesy of Phill Tippet, upon initial release the film was considered a commercial and critical failure. The satirical elements were mostly misunderstood and even interpreted to mean the exact opposite of what was intended. Verhoeven’s hyper-violence and grisly combat scenes were perhaps most appreciated by gorehounds and teenagers. In the last 25 years Starship Troopers has undergone a critical reappraisal. 

So, how’s the film aged since it’s original 1997 release? Listen and find out. As of this writing the film is also available to stream on Netflix. Second-half of the show begins right around the 46-minute mark and the review shortly after.

EPISODE 385: DEADSTREAM

You’re back! That warms our hearts. There’s a lot of crazy shit going on, as usual. Rich people getting their boats flipped by Killer Whales, rich people getting yeeted into soup after imploding in a janky-ass submarine equipped with a cheap gaming controller as a navigation device while trying to visit the Titanic, a mercenary insurrection in Russia. Yes, it’s a wild time to be alive. We suppose this has always been the case though. 

This episode we dive into DEADSTREAM, a found footage horror/comedy revolving around a recently disgraced Youtuber who’s willing to do anything to get his followers back. For those who haven’t seen it the movie is currently available to stream on Shudder.
