How ya been? We’re back with a review of another 2024 horror entry, INFESTED. Aka ‘Vermines’ in it’s native France. 

People are so repelled by spiders they’ve got their own sub-genre: 1990’s Arachnophobia (see episode 219 of WGT for our review), 2002’s Eight Legged Freaks, 1977’s Kingdom of the Spiders (starring motherfucking William Shatner), 1958’s Earth vs. the Spider (an MST3K classic), 2024’s Madame Webb (truly horrifying), and many more. Originally filmed in 1995, this super low budget J horror eventually made it to DVD and theaters in Japan in 2014 before international release in 2017. It’s picked up quite a bit of steam in the years since as a cult classic. It’s currently available to stream on Shudder.

The film is fairly influential and has developed a niche cult following over time. Jorge and Jacob also discuss Cube 2, which is fucking insane. It’s Cronenberg time. A bit of a spiritual successor to Videodrome, 1999’s eXistenZ sees Papa Cronenberg fucking with gaming and virtual reality in his characteristically cerebral, absurd, and physically repellent way.

eXistenZ joins Dark City and The Matrix as late 90’s, pre-millenium forays into the notion of simulated reality and this is definitely the most surreal of the bunch, and possibly the most prophetic. This is Jorge’s first viewing in a couple decades and Jacob’s first ever. Enjoy and long live the new flesh!
