Grey aliens, sleep paralysis, abduction, bad late 80’s fashion, alien dance parties, little blue people, doppelgängers, anal probes, and a lead performance from Christopher Walken at peak absurdity make this a strong contender for one of the strangest Hollywood productions ever made.

This episode we get into Korean auteur Park Chan-Wook’s modern cult classic, OLDBOY,  which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a limited theatrical re-release. It’s a tale of revenge, obsession, torture, and terrible truths. It’s also got one of the most influential single-shot takes in cinema history, involving a hammer.

“You really are the very monster I created, aren’t you? But you won’t find out the “why” of this if you kill me. Fifteen years of being curious would go to waste. You want to torture me, but I can simply kill myself first. Do you want revenge, or do you want the truth? Revenge is good for your health, but pain will find you again.”

EPISODE 387: THEM!

Greetings idiots! And so it came to pass that beloved King Hans, in his wisdom and discernment, blessed us with a horror relic from the atomic age- 1954’s THEM!
As part of his privileges as reigning king of our patreon, good ol’ Hans gets to pick a film. As stated by the man himself, this was selected to accompany the theatrical release of Oppenheimer, as it relates to the aftermath of all the nuclear testing in New Mexico. Besides that though, it all pairs pretty gooooooood with our prior episode, Starship Troopers, as both involve giant bugs and heavily armed humans shooting at them. 

As Warner Bros. highest grossing film of 1954, THEM! was one of this first films of it’s kind, and one of the film industry’s first attempts to process (and exploit) the anxiety and terror of the atomic age through a fictional lense. Meanwhile, over in Japan in the very same year, that country would begin it’s cultural processing of the nuclear atrocities it suffered with a little film called Gojira (Godzilla). 

“Don’t you think I know that? This isn’t one of you text-book exercises, Mr. Jennings. This is an experiment in biological warfare, or hadn’t you noticed? That organism is potentially the greatest breakthrough in weapons research since man split the atom. What we do here will affect the balance of world power!” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast episode 387!

Ep382: Tetsuo The Ironman and Evil Dead Rise

Ah! It’s been a long time, we shouldn’t have left you, without a dope beat to step to. More accurately, it’s been like 3 months at most, and we have no beats.

But we’re back! And when I say “we” I mean exactly two thirds of what you’re used to. Yes, friends, idiots, and people reading this out of morbid curiosity, Matt has shuffled off this silly-ass show and embraced the next chapter of his life. We will miss him and hope he’ll be making periodic special guest appearances when he feels like it.

We have a new cohost on the show joining us. We need the energy of the triforce to sustain the Dee. It’s a new era of sorts, again, for WGT, and the chemistry is guaranteed to be a bit different. We’re just going to continue doing what we do and letting it take shape.

This is a massive slab of content here, as we present to you not one but two episodes. Episode #382 is Matty Ding Dong’s final outing with us which we recorded a few months back. We review and discuss 1989’s Japanese body horror extravaganza, TETSUO: THE IRON MAN.

Episode #383 is our first without Matt, wherein we welcome our new third throbbing member and discuss 2023’s EVIL DEAD RISE.
