EPISODE 423: ALIEN ROMULUS

The time has come. The three of us are all big fans of the Alien franchise and director/writer Fede Alvarez has arrived with his buddy and co-writer Rodo Sayagues to give their take.

As the first film in the long running Alien series to be produced by 20th Century Studios following it’s acquisition by Disney, Alien: Romulus successfully resuscitated the franchise, grossing over $350 million worldwide. But at what cost?

Will the film’s gorgeous production design, modern horror tropes, and nostalgic nods to the greatest hits of the franchise be enough? Or is what some identify as an over-reliance on fan service, imitation, incoherent plotting, and contrivances, ultimately a deal breaker? What did we think? You’re about to find out.

“Z-01 contains the genome responsible for the Xeno’s ability to accelerate and slow down its metabolism at will. Its symbiotic capableness easily rewrites the host’s DNA through its blood. This is a much needed and well overdue upgrade for humanity. We simply cannot wait for evolution anymore.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 423!

EPISODE 422: TRAP

It’s a trap! No really, it is. The one, the only, M. Night Shamalamalama returns with this high concept thriller starring Josh Hartnett as a serial killer taking his daughter to see a pop star portrayed by the writer/director’s daughter.

Review begins right around 45:25. We love you. Another new ep in a few days, next up is Alien: Romulus.

“You know the Butcher? That freakin’ nutjob that goes around just chopping people up? Well, the feds or whatever heard that he’s gonna be here today, so they set up a trap for him. This whole concert? It’s a trap. They’re watching all the exits, checking everyone that leaves. There’s no way to get out of here. It’s kinda dope, right?”

EPISODE 421: LONGLEGS

Welcome back! The time has come for us to discuss the much anticipated serial killer flick, LONGLEGS.

Preceded by months of cryptic and highly effective viral marketing, it’s a big swing from indie film distributor NEON and boasts a strong genre pedigree in writer/director Osgood Perkins, and stars Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe. What did we think? Listen and find out. Also a bunch of other stuff discussed in the first half as usual.
Review starts at 45:25

“The seventh she to be given the same choice they’ve all been given. Crimson, or clover. Accept the gift and destroy, destroy yourself and yourselves. Or keep it. And bow down. Bow all the way down. And get right down to the dirty, dirty work. Work that gets dirty as it cleans. Like a mop. Like a rag.” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 421!

EPISODE 414: INFESTED

How ya been? We’re back with a review of another 2024 horror entry, INFESTED. Aka ‘Vermines’ in it’s native France.

People are so repelled by spiders they’ve got their own sub-genre: 1990’s Arachnophobia (see episode 219 of WGT for our review), 2002’s Eight Legged Freaks, 1977’s Kingdom of the Spiders (starring motherfucking William Shatner), 1958’s Earth vs. the Spider (an MST3K classic), 2024’s Madame Webb (truly horrifying), and many more. So how does this one stack up against the rest? Listen and find out. INFESTED is currently available to stream on Shudder.

Incidentally, it’s the debut feature of director Sebastien Vanicek, reportedly tapped to helm the next film in the Evil Dead franchise.

“The Spider will eat you alive! Bullets…won’t kill it! Flames…can’t burn it! Nothing…can stop it! 50 tons of creeping black horror! It Must Eat You to Live!” It’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 414!

GoFundMe for Alia’s Medical & Dental Bills

To make a donation please visit our GoFundMe Page.

On Tuesday August 13 Alia was in a vespa accident on her way home from work. As she was driving she had to brake suddenly and lost control of the scooter and crashed while doing 35mph.

Alia sustained some bad injuries as a result of the crash. In addition to severe road rash, Alia’s jaw was broken in two places, and a few of her teeth were broken. She was rushed to Sharp Memorial Emergency Room where she was immediately booked for surgery to fix her jaw and reset her teeth.

41402558_1566104253555488_r.jpeg

Currently Alia’s jaw is closed completely shut for a month, forcing her to follow a strict liquid only diet. After a month her doctors will loosen the bands so she can begin to eat soft foods like oatmeal, with ultimately no chewing allowed for 3+ months.

Unfortunately we don’t quite yet know how big the financial hit will be. We have to consider the emergency transport, the out of network hospital stay, the surgery, follow ups, medications, missed work, and dental reconstruction. To fix her two front teeth we’re looking at something like:

Root canal: $1000 x 2
Crown: $800 x 2
or
Impant: $1000-$3000 x2

Just for the teeth we’re looking at anywhere from $3600-$8000.

If you know Alia, you know she is a sweet, selfless, woman who always puts other peoples happiness above her own. She hates asking for help, and the idea that we’re resorting to creating a GoFundMe for help should tell you how worried we are about what’s ahead of us.

Any little bit helps. We understand that not everyone can help out with a donation, even sharing this page helps us out.

Thank you,
 The Smith Family.

it_followsCheck out several new one-sheets for David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows – already the most anticipated horror film of the year – which Radius-TWC will release on March 27th.

“For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), the fall should be about school, boys and weekends at the lake. Yet after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.” Continue reading

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Pushed Back

ResidentEvilRevelations2I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is Resident Evil Revelations 2 will be making its episodic debut a week later than originally planned — see revised release dates below — to allow for some additional fine-tuning. There’s always the Resident Evil HD remake to hold you over.

The good news is the bad news wasn’t all that bad, and we have some spooky monster footage, courtesy of the lovely folks at Capcom who only want the best for us. Continue reading
